Your greatest strength is you

Updated: Apr 4

When it comes to performance, what matters is you, your ability to show up - the strength is not your skill but you as a whole.

Sports and performance are often viewed as challenging endeavors that require a combination of physical and mental abilities to succeed. Athletes who aspire to reach the pinnacle of their sport must possess a diverse range of qualities, such as strength, speed, agility, endurance, and intelligence. However, I believe that the greatest strength of a human being in sports and performance lies within themselves. By this, I mean that athletes who have a strong sense of self-awareness, self-confidence, resilience, and focus are better equipped to overcome obstacles, adapt to changing circumstances, and perform at their best consistently.

Let's take a closer look at each of these traits and how they can influence an athlete's success.

1. Self-awareness:

Self-awareness is the ability to reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and how they impact your performance. Athletes who possess this trait are capable of identifying their strengths and weaknesses, understanding their fears, and recognizing their limits. This self-awareness helps them develop a growth mindset, where they view every challenge as an opportunity to learn and improve. Remember you cannot do awareness in the presence of judgement.

For example, consider an athlete who struggles with public speaking and gets nervous before interviews. By being self-aware, they can recognize this fear and take steps to overcome it, such as practicing mindfulness techniques, doing breathing exercises, or seeking out a good sports psychologist. By working on this, they can become more confident and focused, which can translate into better performance on the field.

2. Self-confidence:

Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and one's abilities. It is the foundation of success in sports and performance, as it drives an athlete to push themselves, take risks, and perform without fear or hesitation. Athletes who have self-confidence can control their emotions, stay calm under pressure, and bounce back from setbacks.

Take the example of a tennis player who is about to serve a match point. If they lack self-confidence, they may overthink their shot and make an error. However, if they believe in their abilities and trust their training, they can execute the serve with precision and win the match. Self-confidence is not something that comes naturally to everyone, but it can be developed by setting achievable goals, visualizing success, and practicing positive self-talk. This is what has separated the Nadal's, Djokovic's, Federer's of the tennis era from others.

3. Resilience:

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, overcome adversity, and keep going despite the obstacles. It is a crucial trait in sports and performance because athletes face many challenges, such as injuries, defeats, and career setbacks. Resilient athletes see these obstacles as temporary setbacks, and they use them as opportunities to learn, grow, and improve.

For example, consider a runner who gets injured weeks before a race. If they lack resilience, they may give up on the race and lose motivation. However, if they are resilient, they can seek out medical help, adjust their training, and work hard to get back on track. By embracing challenges, resilient athletes become stronger, more determined, and more successful.

4. Focus:

Focus is the ability to concentrate on the task at hand and block out distractions. It is a critical trait in sports and performance because it allows athletes to stay in the moment, be in flow state, make quick decisions, and respond to changing situations. Athletes who have high levels of focus can maintain their intensity and momentum throughout a game, and they are more likely to achieve success.

Take the example of a basketball player who is down by one point in the last few seconds of the game. If they lack focus, they may get distracted by the crowd, lose their composure, and miss the winning shot. Conversely, if they are focused, they can shut out distractions, hone in on the goal, and make the game-winning shot. Focus is cultivated through mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, visualization, and meditation - through something that is personal to you.

# Conclusion

In conclusion, the greatest strength of a human being in sports and performance lies within themselves. The ability to be self-aware, self-confident, resilient, and focused can make a difference between winning and losing, and achieving success or enduring frustration. By cultivating these traits, athletes can become not just better players, but better people, with a greater sense of purpose, meaning, and satisfaction in life. No matter how much skill or talent you possess, your greatest strength that will 100% of the times deliver success is - YOU!
