How often do you hit that point whilst training for a race or marathon, where you just cannot find the motivation to keep going?
Getting out of the bed and the thought of putting on those shoes gives you anxiety?
It gets to a point where you just want to give up?
There is ZERO motivation!!
I have been there before, when the pushing “past your barriers’ and “be disciplined” strategy doesn’t work anymore. Is this you? So, what does one do in this scenario?
Physical training is essential but often not enough to ensure success. This is where finding and developing a winning mindset will 100% greatly enhance your performance and propel you towards that finish line.
In this blog, we will explore various strategies to help you find that winning mindset on YOUR run or marathon.
1. Set Clear Goals:
Even google maps needs to know your starting position/ where you are before it can direct you to your
destination. So, before embarking on your running journey, it's essential to set clear and achievable goals. Define what success means to you in terms of time goals, personal records, or simply completing the race. Having specific goals (I stress on PLURAL, as a single goal is never enough) will give you something to strive for and will keep you motivated throughout your training.
2. Embrace Challenges:
The obstacle is the way. Even though google maps charts the quickest path to your destination, there are bound to be obstacles or impediments that hamper or will slow you down. Think about running a race or marathon from that frame. Instead of avoiding or fearing challenges, embrace them as opportunities for growth. When faced with a difficult hill or struggling during the latter part of a race, remind yourself that the obstacle is the way.
3. Focus on the Process:
While end results are important, it's crucial to focus on the process rather than obsessing over the outcome. Fully commit yourself to the process & totally un-attach yourself from the outcome. The process helps build character and adds to the person you become; the end outcome i.e. the finish line is just the fruit of the process.
Concentrate on executing your plan diligently (yes the goals you set in step-1 of this blog), maintaining proper form, and staying in tune with your body's needs. This will help you remain grounded and motivated throughout your run or marathon.
4. Break “IT” Down:
Long-distance races or runs can feel overwhelming, especially when thinking about the distance
remaining. Break the race down into smaller, manageable segments. Focus on achieving shorter milestones or markers along the race route, such as reaching the next water station or completing a specific number of kilometers.
This approach prevents mental exhaustion and creates a sense of accomplishment throughout the race. Its simple really, like you cannot eat an entire burger in a single bite, neither can you finish the marathon in a single stride.
4. Self-Talk & Visualisation
Marathon runners understand the power of useful self-talk. Instead of succumbing to doubts and negative thoughts, they cultivate a useful internal dialogue. By reinforcing belief in their abilities, visualizing themselves crossing the finish line, runners cultivate a sense of confidence and optimism that fuels their performance. Unhelpful thoughts are swiftly dismissed and replaced with empowering mental messages.
5. Setbacks are just Perceived failures:
Setbacks or “failures” are inevitable in any sport, and running is no exception. Rather than dwelling on failures or disappointments, use setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow. Analyse what went wrong or what adjustments could be made in your training or race strategy. By adopting a growth mindset, you will bounce back stronger and more determined.
Conclusion:
The winning mindset of a marathon runner combines all the above. Easier said than done, I know. Remember though, these qualities enable YOU to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges and excel in the face of adversity. While physical training is crucial, it is the mental aspect that will ultimately determines YOUR success.
So, whether you're a seasoned marathon runner or simply seeking inspiration, adopting this winning mindset can lead you to accomplish remarkable feats both on and off the race course. The most powerful tool to accompany your training is the six inches between your ears – THE MIND!!
